With the upcoming merger of American Airlines and US Airways, the two airlines have announced that the frequent flyer programs will merge in the second quarter of next year.  This means that US Airways Chairman’s members will receive 2 Systemwide Upgrades (SWU) for Chairman’s status, and then another 8 SWU for Executive Platinum status after the merger.  This, taken with the easy existing US Airways Preferred status challenge, makes for 10 fairly cheap SWU in the 2015 program year.

Taking this to account, I figured it would be a good time to start the US Airways Preferred status challenge and get to Chairman’s.  For the trial there are 3 options to choose from:

  • Dividend Miles Silver Preferred – $200
  • Dividend Miles Gold Preferred – $400
  • Dividend Miles Platinum Preferred – $600

The status you choose to start with only affects you during the trial and does not limit the status you can earn.  Even if you purchase the Silver Preferred trial you can still earn Chairman by flying the correct number of miles for it.  You need the following number of flown miles to earn the corresponding status:

  • Silver: Fly 7,500 miles or 10 segments
  • Gold: Fly 15,000 miles or 20 segments
  • Platinum: Fly 22,500 miles or 30 segments
  • Chairman’s: Fly 30,000 miles or 40 segments

Once the trial starts, you have 90 days to fly the required miles or segments.  With this in mind, I decided to take a flight to Hong Kong (HKG) from Newark (EWR) with a connection in Dallas (DFW).  HKG is generally a cheap place to fly to and with the connection it is nearly 19,000 miles.  getting over 60% of the miles flown in 3 days is a very tempting proposition, especially since it was over the thanksgiving holiday so I only had to miss a single day of work.  Int he end my itinerary looked like this:

11/26/14    AA1381 EWR – DFW
11/26/14    AA137   DFW – HKG
11/28/14    AA138  HKG – DFW
11/28/14    AA1561 DFW – EWR
